What Type of Loan is Right for Your Needs?

in need of loan
At one point or another, most people will find themselves in need of more money than they currently have in their bank account. No matter how good you are at budgeting and saving your money, there are simply some times when you’ll likely need financial help of some form. Most people find themselves in this situation when they’re making a very large purchase, such as a home or a new car. You may also need outside funding when you’re paying for university for yourself or for a dependent, when you’re moving cities, or when you have unexpected medical costs.

In all of these situations, people typically take out loans. However, there are a wide variety of loan types that you could take out — so how do you decide which is right for your financial situation? Take a look at the some of the most common loan types to help you figure out which one fits your circumstances.

Student loans

As the name implies, student loans are used to fund educational expenses. Student loans can be taken out by college students themselves or by family members in order to pay for the college student. Loans can be either federal or private, although federally funded student loans typically have lower interest rates.

Student loans don’t have to be paid back until after the student has graduated from college. Many student loans have a grace period, to allow the student to find a job and establish themselves before they have to start paying their loans back. Often, this grace period is six months long, although the specific grace period depends on the specific loan. Many student loans also do not begin accruing interest until the student has graduated, making it more feasible to pay off the loans in a timely manner.

Mortgages

Mortgages are a type of loan specific to real estate, and used to allow the borrower to purchase a new home. Most people choose to make a downpayment on their home, and then acquire a mortgage to fund the remainder of the cost of the home. Mortgages are very long-term loans. Borrowers often take mortgages out for 30 years or even longer, which as a result means that mortgages have a low interest rate in comparison to other loan types. Like other loan types, mortgages can be paid off earlier, which saves the borrower on interest that would have been accrued otherwise.

Keep in mind that your home is linked directly to your home, which means that the lender likely has permission to seize the property if you fail to pay your mortgage payments.

Car loans

Car loans are similar to mortgages, in that they’re used to fund a specific large purchase, in this case a new vehicle. Car loans are also linked directly to your vehicle — just like mortgages — so once again your vehicle may be seized by the lender if you don’t make your payments.

Personal loans

Unlike the other loan types listed above, personal loans aren’t earmarked for specific purposes. Instead, they can be used for just about anything, such as medical bills, moving costs, or even vacation. This makes personal loans the most versatile of the loan types, and can be used to cover your financial needs that don’t fit into any other single category. Graduating Without Student Loans: Is It Possible?

student without loans
It’s no secret that the cost of college isn’t cheap. What’s worse is that the cost of tuition is rising year by year. If you don’t think that’s true, just look at the amount of student loan arrears compared to a few years ago. Obviously, you want to go to college because it’s your best chance of succeeding in your field. But, the loan amounts might be too high for you to pay back. If only there were ways which you could attend university without taking on mountains of debt. Oh, wait – there is, and you can find them underneath.

Loan Forgiveness

Okay, so this option might still include a loan of some sort. However, the great thing about a student loan forgiveness non profit scheme is that it severely reduces the total amount. If you’re applicable, the government might write off as much as a third of the cost of the arrears. A third is a large proportion in anyone’s book, so it’s nothing to look down upon. All you have to do is choose an industry which is on the list and send in the application. By the time you graduate, the amount you owe could be minimal, to say the least.

Scholarship

The reason the government doesn’t write off the whole loan is that of scholarships. Yep, some universities pay for students to attend the institute, meaning you don’t have to pay a dime in tuition. As you know, it’s a very competitive field because everyone wants a scholarship. But, if you apply for different types, there is a good chance you might get accepted. Also, don’t forget to show them why you stand out from the crowd. It’s clichéd, but unis like applicants that have more than academic talent.

Community College

Sure, you want to go to a large, reputable college that makes employers eyes bulge when they notice it on your resume. To go to these establishments, you need a lot of money. If you don’t have it, you will need a loan to help you survive. That is, unless, you go to community college first. Okay, it might not have the same reputation, and the campus life might differ. However, you can transfer after two years to any school in the country. As long as your grades are good, they will welcome you with open arms. Then, you only have a year or two of tuition to pay for.

Get A Job

Like going to community college, getting a job straight out of high school is a means to an end. Maybe you will like the job and won’t want to leave. But, if you plan of bigger and better things, you can get them to pay for your education. Employers don’t like to part with their money, but they will if they have a good reason. Sending a worker to school to better their skills is as good a reason as any, so most won’t push back too hard.

Of course, working and studying is a monumental task, but it’s possible. Plus, it’s cheaper.

Education loans during college

But as we all know, student loans are expensive, scholarships are hard to come by and, money is and can never be enough. It's for these reasons that as a student, you have to come up with smart ways that are guaranteed to enable you reduce your college costs and minimize your student loans. In this case, the top 5 ways through which you can make this happen is by:

1. Comparing Housing Options: It's understandable that a number of students desire to live off campus. But since living off campus is bound to present you with a whole load of other expenses, such as transportation, food and other utilities, it's best that you live in a dorm or, commute - just in case your home is close by.

2. Not Buying New Textbooks: Although new textbooks may be of the latest editions, they are no different from older ones. Thus, instead of spending too much money buying new ones, why not buy used ones or rent some from your school? Not only is the latter option cheaper but also rewarding as once you are done using them, you can re-sell them. Alternatively, you could consider downloading their soft-copies to your eReader or computer.

3. Finding Alternative Ways of Making Money: Instead of spending all your college fund(s), why not find ways of making more? For instance, you may try getting a part-time job, or you can apply for a Resident Advisor position (this will help you save on your room and board) or, you may apply for a work-study program. Just in case you have no time doing any of the above, you could try finding work during the summers.

4. Exploring Various Aid Options: With so many easy scholarships to apply for available to college students, it's very likely that you'll come across a number of them that suits your financial needs. Aside from the national scholarships that target all students, you should also visit your specific school's Financial Aid Office and inquire if they are offering student aid. In case you don't qualify, try and meet the set conditions so that you can re-apply come the next semester or academic year.

5. Using your Student Loan Responsibly: Whenever you are left with some extra student loan money, don't squander it. Instead, have it returned to the lender. That way, you will have lesser money to pay back after you have graduated. Other alternative ways through which you can reduce costs while in college as well as minimize your student loan include making sure that you graduate in time - the lesser time you spend studying, the lesser the money that you will need to spend; using campus or public transport rather than bringing your car to school and of course; avoiding the use of credit cards.
